Buying shoes in Japan

I was out yesterday and wandered into a shoe shop. I’m so accustomed to it that I don’t even think about it, but it suddenly occurred to me that it’s actually not very normal…

Did you know Japan sells shoes in a grand total of 4 sizes?

I darted around the shop, surreptitiously taking photos in a manner a ninja would be proud to witness.

All for your viewing pleasure.

Tough luck if your foot falls outside of these sizes.

Of course there are places that sell shoes by the usual half-size increments la, but those are actually pretty rare for female fashion shoes (as opposed to say, guy shoes or sneakers).

Expensive brands will have the regular sizing, but I don’t shop at those places. $200 for a pair of normal-looking shoes? No way.

My foot is actually in between sizes, so what I have to do is buy the bigger size and then stuff it with shoe sole/padding that I get from Daiso. Sigh. It’s been so long since I had comfortable, nice-fitting shoes :G
