Learning Krav Maga

We went for a Krav Maga class yesterday!

Krav Maga is a self-defense system developed for the military in Israel that consists of a wide combination of techniques sourced from boxing, savate, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Judo, Jujutsu, wrestling, and grappling, along with realistic fight training. Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and extremely efficient and brutal counter-attacks.

The technique in this video was exactly one of the things I learned yesterday!

Before the warm-up was even over (about 15 mins into the hour-long session) I was gasping and wheezing, wondering if the class was going to end soon lol. I’m so terribly unfit that halfway through, my heart actually started to tighten a little painfully and I had to ask to switch with my partner. This makes previous body combat classes I’ve taken a walk in the park!

Fu was also utterly exhausted, with sweat pouring down his face. Although he still had an appetite and chomped down cereal bars after the class, so he probably wasn’t that affected. I had absolutely no appetite and even felt a bit nauseated. I think that’s my body’s way of protesting the sudden flood of intensive activity haha!

At the end of the session, we… signed up for classes for the rest of the month. HAHA. Not because I like to torture myself, but because it can help raise my fitness level and is actually useful. I think everyone, whether male or female, should learn some self-defense techniques so that they at least have the confidence and knowledge to be able to protect themselves if the need arises. I don’t advocate violence, but if it happens to me, the least I want to do is to be able to stop it (and then run away).

This trip to Austin is really kicking my lazy butt into action! Table tennis lessons, rock climbing, now Krav Maga.

My arms and abs are aching so much. Hello, you new muscles. Haven’t seen you guys before. Stick around a bit and perhaps take up permanent residence?
